The idea and object were the result of a platform workshop: each student was asked to apply their personal theme to
a site of their choice (in/around RCA building), and to design a parasite, or something that would change the way it
was used.
My idea was to combine the English National Ballet with the Hyde Park (both neighbours to the RCA building), and to
explore them through the 'woman's happiness' theme. A 'giant' ballet tutu was designed and placed around a tree.
The film is the result of such intervention: a metaphor of emotions and memories.
Woman's happiness #4 - Lover’s Blanket

There is no written story for this movie... but I thought that it could be almost like 'the life story of a couple": very much
in love at the beginning (lots of movements together) but then the love starts to fade, arguments start and they
become apart; then another female and a another men join the scene and attach their ribbons to each element of the
couple and this is when they become unfaithful to each other and they start to dance with their lovers. Then time
passes and also the unfaithfulness begins to fade... the first couple still together but they have started this relationship
of peaceful indifference... like an old couple who seat side by side but rarely speak.
The main idea is that all the elements (2 chairs, 1 table, 2 woman's vests, 2 men's vests) featured
in the film are connected to red ribbons.
The movement of the bodies and the objects will interlace the ribbons and therefore will create a
woven cloth.
This cloth will be part of a blanket… a blanket that 'tells' the story of a couple.
Woman's happiness #5 - The Proposal

Owen wanted to propose to future Mrs. Owen (also known as “Lilly Lipstick”).
The surprise was being prepared… the restaurant cook was placing the silver engagement ring inside the fish meal
they both had chosen. But something happened…Future Mrs. Owen was still reacting normally… why wasn't she
reacting like Owen expected? Did the cook not follow his strict instructions? Was she not impressed with the
proposal? Where did the ring go?

A design object can be seen as a metaphor to a situation or a feeling.
Associated with a narrative, a breakable frame becomes a witness to a silent suffer.
The tension and violence between a man and a woman is then reflected through the object.

A first draft of a woman handbag was designed during a platform workshop.
A woman's handbag (vagina shape bag) is so personal and private object that be considered to be part of her own
body. This was the focus idea of the narrative and film.
Embroider bedsheets (sweat dreams) were also produced to take part of the narrative.
Claudia Costa’s work has concentrated on a personal development exploring new media for communicating the designed ideas.In her second year she is exploring her main theme ‘woman’s happiness’ and relationships of design, dance and human behaviour through film. The design objects are then explored as key characters in the short-stories (narratives) that are then communicated through the exploration of moving images. |
